Minecart Rail Stations
I'm still playing with minecarts and trying to build better rail stations. I've built quite a few now.
The minecarts can now travel everywhere in Apvia including Lakewood!
I've learned a few things since my last post on minecarts.
Trying to make minecarts that continuously travel from one destination to another is possible and looks pretty cool, however, since they don't travel that far empty building them is really super expensive! The other problem is, well.... this:
So I'm going to stick with the button method in my builds, however that is annoying too. The carts stop when they reach unpowered power rail, so you have to push it back or break it down and replace it.
My solution is to add a second switch at the end of the booster rail. That way I can hit the button and nudge the cart and it'll return to the starting position.
So I get in the cart and hit button 1 and I'm off (in this case to Empire Station) but when I return the cart will stop right away. To get it back against the starting block I just hit button 2 and nudge the cart. It works pretty well.
The other thing I discovered was some magic squid that could float in the air!?!
Oh well, they made me laugh.
Java... go figure.

How To Change Pictures/Artwork in Minecraft
I was asked to post a tutorial on changing the artwork in minecraft once I figured it out. Well,... I did,... so here's the tutorial:
First you'll need something to open the minecraft.jar file and an image editor.
As always I like to use free stuff. So to open the minecraft jar file I use 7zip and to edit the picture I use paint.net. You can also use winrar and photoshop or paint.
So,... navigate to: C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar
Back up any files before you change them. Just copy past into the same folder and windows (7) will automatically append a -copy.
Note: If you are using a texture pack then navigate to it instead since minecraft will be using the art folder in the texture pack zip not the minecraft.jar.
Right click on minecraft.jar and select "7zip" and "open archive."
Navigate to the "art" folder and click on Kz.png then select "extract" above the address bar.
Open the artwork you want to add by going to Image > Import From File, navigate to the picture you want and click OK.
Now you'll need to re-size the image over an existing image by grabing and draging the small boxes around your imported image. Make sure your image covers the existing one exactly.
Like so:
Tip: If you import a large image your canvas size will change and you'll need to trim it back to its original size.

I'm using an HD texture pack and mod so my images look way better than they would otherwise.
Overall I think it spruces the place up ;)

Minecraft 1.6 : Carte / Mini-map
C'est officiel, la grande nouveauté (la seule ?) de Minecraft Beta 1.6 sera l'ajout d'une Carte / Minimap craftable. La carte vous dévoilera les zones explorées à partir de l'endroit où vous l'avez crafté. Une fois toute la carte remplie, il vous faudra en créer une autre pour avoir un aperçu des nouvelles zones découvertes.
Pour ce qui est de l'utilisation, il suffira de regarder vers le bas pour avoir un aperçu de la carte.
Notch travaille actuellement sur l'implémentation de cette Carte / Mini-map au mode multi-joueurs.

Minecraft Powered Rail
I thought I would post about the best way I've found to use powered rail so far.
There are stations all over Apvia to save walking time rail has become really important.
To start: this is the basic starter booster I have been using. It is a chest to hold minecarts, a block and switch and 5 powered rails (which minecraft wiki says gives the biggest boost).
Below are examples of two way powered boosters (they'll boost a cart traveling either direction. The one on the right uses switches that turn power on when a cart runs over them. The one on the left is permenantly on by way of a redstone torch.
Below is an illustration of how a permanently running station works. The cart is always moving between the ends of the line.
There is a loading platform where travelers can get in and out of the carts with a right click. Users simply wait at the station for the train to arrive and get off wherever it is they want to go. You can have many platforms and make the lines as long or short as you want or even make it go in a circle. I'm not sure if this is too disruptive on a server though since minecarts tend to use up a lot of clock cycles.
Mobs will, however, gum up the works on occasion. I'm waiting for the first creeper to arrive on a platform.

How To Suggest Movement In Minecraft
I thought I would talk about an artistic technique for making an otherwise static looking world seem like it is moving. The specific examples are the airships below but also in the previous post about the airship terminal where an airships seem to be coming in for a landing.
So the first thing to decide is where in your world movement would be occurring and what direction it would be going in. This means figuring out the line of movement; the vector, if you like. Artists call it the "flow."
The rule here is that you can direct the eye by anticipating where movement is going. This is to say that if someone throws a ball we look to where we expect the ball to hit. We look even if the person throwing the ball is painted. If we see something the ball might hit we perceive action i.e., movement. So a painting of someone in the stretch ready to unleash a fast ball is far less effective if the back catcher isn't also in the picture. A batter will really set the piece off! Our minds will anticipate all the action and thereby our minds also animate the picture.
So if I put an airship at dock and another where we would expect it to have come from we perceive movement. This doesn't mean we see things moving but that it feels like movement. This brings the world alive much like a painter brings their work alive.
In a 3D world you want the movement to be very lineal and without much distraction since it will have to be interpreted by any angle.
So in my example below you can see the two construction ships are really very close together. That is because they are surrounded by so much distraction (buildings and what not).
You can also see that they are carrying something that obviously fits somewhere else. This also helps create the line of action (remember the back catcher), this is where the block is going. So we have where it has come from and where it is going.
It also works to think of this as an animation. You have the start of the action, the end of the action (where the piece fits) but you also need some players in between (the airships) to help tell the narrative, that is, explain how the action is going to unfold. The fewer the distractions the further apart players can be.
The nice thing about minecraft is that, because it is 3D, you don't need to worry about composition; it really is all about the flow of action, which is why the action is difficult to capture in a screen shot, but on the ground it looks great.
Anyway, I hope someone finds this tutorial useful. It might take a little practice but suddenly a very plain world can seem alive and moving. I think the effort is well worth it.

How to install an HD (High Definition) texture pack
I recently found a texture pack I just love!
It makes Apvia look very steampunk and I'm going to start designing around that look.
The first two pictures are of the new Abby terminal 1. It's just a faster way to get to the station.
The only thing that I don't like are the pictures but because it's licensed under Creative Commons I'm pretty sure I can rip them out and put my own in; which I'm going to do shortly. Instead of being decorative I'm going to make them utilitarian for an 1800's technology feel.
How To:
Exit minecraft altogether. You should even back your files up just in case. I do this by copying and pasting in the same folder so I have a minecraft copy.jar. Windows appends the (copy) automatically.
The next step is to patch the minecraft.jar file which you do with the MC HD Patcher.
It's super easy: just download and execute. It does all the heavy lifting.
So the theme I'm using is the very popular [64x][1.5_01] Ovo's Rustic Pack v0.7.
Download it and place the .zip file in C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\texturepacks\
Don't extract it. Just place the .zip file in the folder.
If you can't find the AppData folder it's because you have the "Don't Show Hidden Files and Folders" option on. Go to Control Panel, select Folder Options and turn the option off. It's a good idea to turn the option back on again when you're done.
Fire up minecraft and click on Mods and Texture Packs
Select the texture and you're good to go!
